Bala Kandam Slokam #6

srooyathamithi samantrya prakrushto vakyamabraveeth ||

Gist:

Sage Narada, who possess all the knowledge about the three worlds, became very happy on hearing Valmiki's questions. He praised Valmiki's such questions, made him sit across and started answering.

Meaning:

Trilokagna = who possess all the knowledge about the three worlds
Naradha: = Sage Narada
valmike: = Valmiki's
Ethath = such questions
cha = Also whatever there was in his mind
sruthva = heard and understood
prahrushda: = became very happy
vacha: srooyathaam = Listen to me
ithi = thus
Aamanthrya = sat him across
vaakyam = to answer him
abraveeth = started answering.

Explanation:

As per the Atharvana Upanishad verse 'Thathvigyanaartham sa gurumevapi kacheth', to attain knowledge student has to go in search of his Guru. But here Sage Narada who is Guru has come down to his Student on his own. We can understand the inner meaning of this incident as this. Since the time is now ripe for the student to gain his knowledge, Guru himself has come to him.

'Nasamvathsaravaseene brabrooyaath' - According to this verse, a student has to serve his Guru for atleast one year, to be eligible to get upadesha from Guru. If this the case, we can ask how Sage Narada did upadesha to Valmiki at once? There is an exception to the above rule. That is, the elder son is exempted from this rule. He need not serve as per the above rule. Valmiki is like elder son to Sage Narada. Sage Brugu is brother to Narada and Valmiki is Brugu's son. Hence, even without his serving, Narada did upadesha to Valmiki, with atmost love and affection.

'Trilokagna' - One who possesses the entire knowledge about Bhuloka, Bhuvarloka and Suvarloka. Or one who possesses the entire knowledge about Baddhaloka, Nithyaloka, Nithyamukthaloka.

'Srutva cha' - On hearing Valmiki's questions. By adding 'cha', we should assume that Sage Narada got the questions which were not even asked by Valmiki, and he answered them too.

'Prahrushta:' - Brahma asked Narada to spread the entire Ramayana in the universe. Narada came to Valmiki's ashrama to give upadasha of Ramayana. Since Valmiki too asked questions about the same subject, Narada became happy.
